Pets... A Cure for Loneliness

As the world becomes more interconnected through technology, you would think that people would also become connected. The internet is a wonderful thing, but it does take away a key piece of human wellbeing: social interaction. Sure, you can socially interact with people all over the web, but you may do so alone in your home. You can even date online now! If you find yourself lonely at home, even with the web at your fingertips, then you may want to consider adopting or rescuing a pet.

When people are lonely for a period of time, they may end up in a state of depression. Medication or a weekly social class may not adequately treat the depression or chronic loneliness. A pet, on the other hand, can be a perfect candidate for getting rid of the lonely blues. A pet needs fairly constant interaction with a human being, requiring physical and emotion care. Perhaps you, or someone you know, could benefit from having a pet to care for. Or maybe, you aren’t in a state of depression, but you are experiencing a life change. Pets can help people cope with relocation, a loss of a loved one, and a transition into a new job. Caring for a pet can be both emotionally and physically beneficial for the owner.

If you live alone, then you know how easy it is to get lonely. A night out with friends is fun, but returning home alone isn’t always the best end to the evening. Pets are wonderful for emotional support.

They are waiting for you when you get home from work, and they are always there whether you’re having a good day or a bad day. A pet relies on the owner for food, water and play, which can develop a psychological routine for both parties. Knowing that something depends on you can cause you to look forward to getting home at the end of the day. Dogs and cats will also spend time by their owners’ sides, simply watching the television or napping. It’s great to have a friend that’s always there.

A dog can be a great physical stimulant for the owner. Dogs require regular exercise, and must be let outside multiple times a day. For the owners, the daily walks can be used as an exercise routine or as a way to relieve stress from the day at work. Dogs can also be an excellent topic for discussion. On the walk, others may stop and speak to you and your dog, providing social interaction that you probably wouldn’t experience inside your home.

If you are about to move to a new place or start a new job, then consider adopting or rescuing a pet. Pets can provide many psychological, emotional, and physical benefits for people who may be on the edge of loneliness. Having a pet depend on you creates a bond that can rival human interaction. Although we are all connected through the internet, many of us still lack interaction with another living being. Why not get a pet to fill that void?
